Once a month, I gather in community to sing with others. Our Powderhorn-based group is led by musician, song-leader, and educator Sarina Partridge. A goal of our time together is to fill ourselves so we can show up more fully in our lives — like for emotional labor, social justice work, and all those other invisible and important things we do to make our world better. We usually sing rounds so we can layer and lean into the music.
This is a song we keep coming back to. It’s called Loosen Loosen, and it’s by Aly Halpert. It’s a mindful, meditative mantra of a song. Aly wrote this song to help heal personal and societal grief. Every month someone calls for us to sing it, so, every month, we join our voices to say:
Loosen loosen baby
You don’t have to carry
The weight of the world
In your muscles and bones
Let go
Let go
Let go
